Whitney Houston dies from a self-induced drug overdose. Prior to her death she spent the past however many years destroying her career, famous voice, and life with abusive drug use. The press that followed her death lasted for over a week; hundreds of thousands of people, probably more, mourned her passing like it was a personal loss. Sales of her albums skyrocketed. Once again, this is a woman who destroyed herself with recreational drug use, let down her fans by canceling concerts and putting on terrible shows, and was basically irrelevant for years except for random mentions of her drug binges in the media.
Davy Jones, the former lead singer of The Monkees died today and the coverage has been negligible. There are no mass vigils, no constant posts, tweets, or status updates about what an amazing singer he was, or how he and The Monkess influenced the music industry during some of it’s most revolutionary years. This man was a real figure in music, unlike Whitney whose crack addiction and relationship drama grabbed headlines.
